A Christian wedding invitation names the hosts, gives the couple, names the service correctly for the denomination, and gives the church, the celebrant and the reception. The part most often got wrong on Indian cards is the name of the service: a Catholic nuptial mass, a Marthoma or CSI solemnisation and an Orthodox Holy Matrimony are not the same thing and the card should say which it is.
The scripture line
Most Indian Christian cards open with a short verse, set above the hosts. These are the ones printed most often.
"Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." — Mark 10:9
"Love is patient, love is kind." — 1 Corinthians 13:4
"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour." — Ecclesiastes 4:9
"I have found the one whom my soul loves." — Song of Solomon 3:4
"Whither thou goest, I will go." — Ruth 1:16
"This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." — Psalm 118:24
Name the service the way your church names it
| Denomination | The service | Usual card wording |
|---|---|---|
| Roman and Syro-Malabar Catholic | Nuptial Mass | The Nuptial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. |
| Syro-Malankara Catholic | Holy Qurbana and Marriage | The Marriage will be solemnised during the Holy Qurbana |
| Orthodox and Jacobite | Holy Matrimony | The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony at 10:30 a.m. |
| Marthoma | Marriage Service / Solemnisation | The Marriage will be solemnised at 11:00 a.m. |
| CSI | Marriage Service | The Marriage Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. |
| Pentecostal and independent | Wedding Ceremony | The Wedding Ceremony at 10:00 a.m. |
Naming the celebrant is normal and expected on Kerala cards — "Rev. Fr. Thomas Kurian will officiate" — and for Catholic and Orthodox weddings the parish is given in full, because it identifies the family as much as the church.
